Built in 2000, the Centre County Penn State Visitor Center is a welcoming gateway to Penn State and Centre County. The Visitor Center services hundreds of visitors and local residents each day. Guests can find out what is happening in the area and pick up brochures on Central PA businesses, attractions and outdoor recreation. The 15,000 sq. ft. center is based on an eco-friendly design that provides visitors an opportunity to see a beautiful native landscape, rechargeable groundwater area, and sustainability principles applied to the building.
The Center utilized principles of green architecture to work with the building's environment. The strategic placement of windows takes advantage of natural light and gains solar heating and warmth. Effluent pipelines extract excessive heat to warm and cool the building. The center cultivates native landscapes that require minimal maintenance and water. Two small wetlands and a porous pavement parking lot contribute to the center's groundwater recharge area.
The Center features state-of-the-art interactive tourism network kiosks, wireless internet, a large brochure/information area, an exhibit gallery, auditorium, retail, vending area and is pet friendly! The Center, open 7 days a week, gives visitors a chance to tour and explore the region while exemplifying the ecological leadership of Penn State and the Centre County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
