Completed in August 2009, the North Frear Renovation is home to Penn State's Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB). Pending LEED Certification, the 96,000 sq. ft. building renovation and the 2,500 sq. ft. courtyard addition improves the classrooms, research labs and office space. The 2,500 sq. ft. addition houses plant growth chambers and program space for the Eberly College of Science.
The renovated space and addition have sustainable principles applied to the overall design of the building system, such as heat recovery in the air handling units and variable air volume fume hoods to regulate the amount of air flow. Construction debris was recycled whenever possible and low VOC paints and stains were used. The addition, along with a landscaped courtyard and improved South Frear connector, will create pedestrian access and invite spectators to the enhanced lobby and gathering area.
